harry potter cauldron cakes.
I love to read. As a child you would always find me outside, digging in the mud, pond dipping, & attempting to build death-trap tree houses so I could sit in them & read in peace.
If I was asked to choose one series of books which defined my growing up I would have to choose Harry Potter. I read the first book the summer before I started at boarding school & suddenly Harry’s world was incredibly familiar to me. There was a letter containing things you were advised to bring to school & a trip to London to buy uniform & other important items.. (Only I went home with a lacrosse stick instead of a broomstick!)
& these are what I imagine cauldron cakes to be:

Ingredients:
For the pastry:
- 225g plain flour
- 110g butter
- 80g sugar
- 1 large egg (+ milk if needed to form a dough)
For the filling:
- 85g hazelnuts
- 50g golden caster sugar
- 200g dark chocolate
- 100g butter
- 1 egg
- 3 egg yolks
For the topping:
- mini marshmallows & the leftover hazelnuts from the filling.
Method:
i. Make the pastry by rubbing together the butter, sugar and flour. Beat in the egg & if required add milk to form a dough. Roll out & line 6 buttered ramekins.
ii. Bake the pastry at 180c/Gas 6 with baking beans for 10 minutes, remove the beans & bake for a further 10 minutes.
iii. Toast the hazelnuts in a pan until brown, then add 4tbsp of sugar & stir until caramelised, then leave to cool on some parchment paper.
iv. Melt the chocolate & butter together. Beat the egg, yolks and sugar in a separate bowl until fluffy then spoon in the chocolate mix.
v. Crush the hazelnuts & spoon into the bottom of the pastry cauldron before filling it up with the chocolate filling.

vi. Turn the oven down to 140c/Gas 3 & bake for 40 minutes or until a skewer comes out nearly clean.

vii. Remove from the oven & leave to cool. Just before serving top with mini marshmallows and grill gently until melted. Sprinkle on any remaining hazelnuts and enjoy!

Next time I make these I might add some lemon or ground almonds to the pastry to add a little something.. & also roll it a bit thinner! But apart from that I’m very pleased with how these have turned out! I may try & recreate a few more HP recipes in the future!

Oh, sweet, these looks awesome! I’ve grown up with Harry Potter too, I actually remember turning my nose up at it in 5th grade because I didn’t want to follow a trend or whatnot, ahah.
Ahhh I have been an unashamed fangirl since the beginning! Although I’d like to think my love of all things Hogwarts is less.. apparent.. now that I’m older! x
